Selecting the Best Garden Equipment

If you go into a home improvement store you will observe rows and rows of power equipment made specifically for the yard. You can find equipment to trim the hedges, cut the lawn, cultivate the garden and many other things! You would have to construct a very big shed to house all this equipment! But you don’t need it all, even though the salesman may convince you that you do. Nearly all gardeners can get by with just a few fundamental equipment when it comes to power equipment for the garden.

Cut That Grass!
If you have grass you are going to need a lawn mower to keep it appearing great. There are many assorted types of mowers to choose from. Do you want a fuel powered mower or one that is powered by electricity? A riding mower or one you push? Bagging or Mulch? There is a lot to think about when it comes to picking the perfect mower for your yard. Here are several things to consider:

Size of yard. Smaller gardens do well with an electric or cordless lawn mower. An electric mower is less noisy than the gas powered ones and they are simple use and low-priced to maintain. Then again, if you have a corded mower the cord length will confine your movement so they are best for very small yards. If you have a larger yard but want an electric mower, you should get a cordless model. Cordless mowers can mow approximately 1/3 of an acre on a charge.  Riding mowers are ideal for gardeners who have very big gardens or hilly terrain. A push mower is a good selection for small yards since there isn’t a lot of room for a riding model to turn.

Bagging or mulching. If you have green waste pick up in your area you may want to consider a bagging mower. You can then send the clippings to your area collection site.  If you don’t have a neighborhood location, you can set up your own compost heap and add your grass trimmings to it. If neither of these methods will work for you, then a mulching mower is a excellent choice. These mowers cut the clippings into tiny pieces so they will fall back into the grass and decompose.

Tiller
A garden tiller is one of those types of garden equipment that you either have to have or you can do without. If you have a small yard or mostly lawn, you probably won’t have much need for a garden tiller. However, if you have a large garden or flower beds a garden tiller will help make short work of breaking up the soil and getting it ready for planting.

Just like lawn mowers, there are several options when it comes to choosing a garden tiller. If you have a large yard or garden you will probably want a big, gas powered garden tiller. A tiller like this will be strong enough to break up the soil and prepare a large spot for planting. You will need to make sure you have fuel available so you can finish a job! Gas tillers require scheduled upkeep and care so they will run smoothly each time. Don’t store it over winter with gas in the tank or you will have issues in the spring!

If your yard is small or you need to work around shrubs and trees, a small tiller is a good option. Small tillers are light weight and easy to use. They typically only have two small tines, but they can dig up a flower bed in no time! Small tillers come in both electric and gas styles. However, an electric tiller is simpler to care for and they are significantly less noisy than the gas models.

Additional garden equipment you may discover are items like hedge trimmers, edgers, and leaf blowers. This equipment is found in the elective category. If your garden has features that require some of this equipment then you should have it, but it isn’t a neccessity for every gardener. Gardeners who have hedges will benefit from a trimmer, and if you have a lot of trees an electric leaf blower is helpful.. However, the average gardener wouldn’t have a use for most of these tools.

Powered yard equipment can help make your yard work less difficult and more efficient. Do your research and determine which kind of equipment you have got to have for your garden. Working in the yard will be more worthwhile when you have wonderful tools to help you get it done!
