What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Artificial Grass Turfs?

A lot of people are thinking about artificial grass right now.

The popularity has gone to such an extent that there are not just local manufacturers of such turfs but they are being shipped internationally as well, and because of that, there is a lot of variety from people to choose from.

Some of the common materials that are used in making such artificial grass turfs include plastics like polyethylene and polypropylene and synthetic fibers like nylon—people indeed have several options to choose from.

When artificial grass turfs were introduced, they were almost instantly lapped up by sports grounds.

But, in those days, the materials used weren’t the best, and people stopped using these kinds of turfs.

Today, artificial grass has made a comeback with improved quality and materials and people are going all out to use this enhanced type of grass for their homes and offices, and you will also find them in tennis and badminton courts, sports clubs, golf courses, athletic tracks, football arenas and such places.

But, what is it that has made artificial grass so popular in recent times?

And why is there some opposition to it as well?

Let’s talk about its various advantages and disadvantages now.

Advantages of Artificial Grass

  1. Artificial grass is known for its great environmental benefits.

Mainly, it does not require a lot of water as real grass does.

Moreover, since this grass is not real, you don’t need to worry about it taking up nutrients from your soil.

The fertility of soil remains as it is.

  1. The second big advantage is that this is almost zero maintenance grass.

It doesn’t need to be watered or fertilized with manure to preserve it.

There is no need to mow it like you need to do with real grass.

  1. This is also considered to be a safer option than real grass.

Real grass can breed harmful insects, rodents and snakes.

Real grass may also contain sharp objects within them, such as stone and shards of glass, which may be dangerous to people walking on them.

  1. The installation is easier as well.

You don’t have to prepare a bed extensively like you have to do with real grass.

If you have put up a carpet ever, you will notice the similarity. These turfs are premade to just be put up on the ground.

You can do it yourself; but for real grass installation, you will almost always need a professional gardener to install and maintain it.

Disadvantages of Artificial Grass

The only con, probably, is the fact that artificial grass is artificial, i.e. it is not ‘real’.

Some people don’t get the feel of real grass when they walk on it.

You may also find that the texture, smell and color of this grass are different.

But, new materials are already developed that make even artificial grass look as real as possible.

So, if you are thinking about artificial grass for your residence or commercial establishment, you are not thinking of a bad idea!

You may even get a tax rebate for being so friendly to the environment!
